Woven – Open Call

Open call for submissions.
An exhibition exploring the medium of the woven material as a conduit for artistic expression and design conclusions.
Curated by Tokyojo, Artist/Designer/Maker.
In conjunction with and supported by Sheffields Year of Making.
From the humble unconsidered woven canvas surface that supports the paint, to the finest silk couture constructions stalking the catwalks of Paris, woven material has a unique position to the artist and designer, being inspiration, conveyance and resolution.
We are looking for work that explores these relationships, whether this is something as simple as an interest and physical exploration of a particular woven material, or a conceptual narrative backed by said investigation. This could be something as simple as a painted piece giving thought to the surface or history of its canvas underpinning, or a garment or artefact constructed of woven materials. We welcome submissions in non-traditional woven fabrics, and in wearable art or design outcomes. Particular interest will be shown to work that explores the relationship between the artist and the designer, and the interaction of both practices.
We are happy to consider existing pieces. Particular interest will be given to new, emerging and rarely-exhibiting artists and designers. All work must be of a high quality, and must be offered for sale at no less than £100 (there is no roof for submissions pricing). While there is no fee for showing, all promotion, mounting and hanging will be carried out at the gallery’s expense (within reason, limited budget and agreed at time of acceptance of submission). All materials must be paid for by artist/designer so please take this into account when pricing work. The gallery will add 15% to your sale price as commission, and this will be reinvested into the gallery.
Submissions and proposals in writing please, at no more than 250 words, plus artist/designer bio/statement. Submissions should include images of existing work or preliminary sketches or maquette/toiles, and approximate sizes of final work. Submissions and further inquires to jo@tokyojo.net
Final proposals by 12/9/2016.
Final deadline for accepted work to be submitted for mounting and hanging by 5pm 5/11/016.
