Structural Colour: Paul Evans Artist’s Residency

Past Events

Sheffield based artist Paul Evans is currently undertaking a residency within University of Sheffield Department of Physics. This will take place over a period of 9 months during Year of Making Sheffield 2016, in collaboration with The Natural History Museum (NHM), London, leading global paint manufacturer Akzo Nobel (Dulux) and Sheffield based graphic designers Humanstudio.

Paul is researching and experimenting alongside leading physicists to develop new artworks exploring the concept of ‘Structural Colour’: i.e. colours generated by microscopic physical structures rather than through pigments or projected light.

Outputs from this residency will lead to a series of physical and digital creations including an immersive, interactive, virtual reality colour environment, ‘paintings’ using nano tech films, colour poetry, and sound art based on the blue bars from a jay’s wing.

The residency is funded by Arts Council England, The University of Sheffield and Akzo Nobel.
