In 2016 Tramlines Festival invited a group of leading Sheffield musicians to pay tribute to The Beatles’ ‘Revolver’ at that years’ festival. A veritable supergroup of musicians from the city was formed, with members of Screaming Maldini, Hey Sholay, Renegade Brass Band, Before Breakfast, Captives On The Carousel, Cats.For.Peru and many others coming together. Wanting to play the music as authentically as possible, some of the city’s leading classical and jazz musicians joined on strings, brass and Indian instruments to recreate the sound, and in July 2016 they managed something The Beatles never did and performed the album in full as it originally sounded.
The success of this meant that in 2017 the same group wanted to tackle the seminal masterpiece ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ to celebrate it’s 50th anniversary. Knowing the album’s special place in musical history the band the band grew to a 30 piece ensemble, adding more brass, strings, woodwind and even a harp. They have been joined on vocals by Sheffield legends Steve Edwards and Jack Weston, aka Kid Conventional.
This 30 piece behemoth will bring to life the complexity and brilliance of one of the greatest albums ever written twice this year, once at Tramlines festival and then a special show (with a few other Beatles hits thrown in) on November 25th at the 02 Academy Sheffield. The only thing we don’t have are the Scouse accents – this project belongs to Sheffield!
