Construction House: Order and Limitations

Construction House is a six-month programme of commissions, exhibitions, events and activities by S1 Artspace studio holders, which will reflect on the philosophy and relevance of the influential Bauhaus movement for today’s practicing artist. The Bauhaus celebrates its centenary in 2019.
The first exhibition in the series presents newly commissioned work by artists James Clarkson, Ashley Holmes, and Roanna Wells alongside archival Bauhaus material, photographs, film and original design objects

  • Order & Limitations: Artists’ Tour
    Sat 10 Nov, 2pm / FREE, DROP IN
    Join artists James Clarkson, Ashley Holmes and Roanna Wells for an informal tour of Order & Limitations, the first exhibition in Construction House. The artists will explore the research and ideas behind their work in the exhibition.


  • Alison J Carr: Bauhaus Bühnenchor
    DINA, 32 Cambridge St, Sheffield S1 4HP

    Bauhaus Bühnenchor is a live performance that experiments with the all-girl kickline. Using the kickline as a form with the potential to represent women’s collective and creative force, Bauhaus Bühnenchor imagines the experiences of Bauhaus female art students and chorus girls in Weimar, as well considering the context of dancing in a troupe today.  The performance is a collaboration between artist Alison J Carr and Lucy Haighton, a movement artist and choreographer based in Sheffield.


  • Talk: Ian Whittlesea on Johannes Itten
    8 Dec / 2pm / FREE, DROP IN
    Join artist Ian Whittlesea for an introduction to Bauhaus Master Johannes Itten’s breathing and meditation exercises. Ian will explore the influence of the Mazdaznan spiritual movement on Itten’s preliminary course at the Bauhaus, followed by a demonstration with Sheffield-based yoga teacher Nicola Harpin.

Construction House is part of Making Ways, a programme supported by Sheffield Culture Consortium through Arts Council England to showcase, celebrate and develop the exceptional contemporary visual art produced in the city. Additional support has been generously provided by The Fenton Arts Trust and The Finnis Scott Foundation.
